An employee of a Teesside civil engineering firm has become the first in the country to receive Considerate Constructor award for work at a prison site.
As a preferred supplier to the Ministry of Justice, Henderson Campbell has been involved in the construction or extension of secure units all over the UK for the past 15 years.
MD Antony Henderson believes very firmly in the benefits of employing staff rather than using contractors, and regularly training them in all aspects of construction and site working.
This has now paid off with site manager, Brian (Jock) Paterson having been presented with a Bronze certificate in the 2009 Considerate Contractors awards – a national scheme created to improve the image of the industry.
Mr Paterson (pictured left), who has worked for Henderson Campbell for 13 years, attended a ceremony at The Gibson Hall in London to collect his certificate. He was in charge of the site at HMP Stocken where, in conjunction with its Home Office contract partner, Caledonian Building Systems, Henderson Campbell has been involved with the development of two new accommodation units plus a workshop, gymnasium, kitchen and storage building and the refurbishment of several other areas.
Inspectors commended the site for the high standards reached in the categories of Environment, Cleanliness, Neighbour, Respectful, Safe, Responsible and Accountable. They described the site as ‘a credit to the whole site team’.
Said Antony Henderson: “We do run a very tight ship on our sites and I am confident that other ongoing projects in our portfolio operate to a similar high standard as the Stocken one highlighted by the inspectors.
“We have only been affiliated to the Considerate Constructors scheme for three years so to get an award already is fantastic!
“Hopefully it will give our clients even more confidence in the high standard that we produce at all levels of our operation.”
Henderson Campbell is currently working on prison sites throughout the UK, including Kirklevington on the outskirts of Yarm, Barnard Castle and Castington in Northumberland, as well as further afield at HMP Haverigg (Millom, Cumbria), HMP Send and HMP Coldingley (Woking, Surrey) and HMP Wymott (Preston, Lancs).
